Working in Haiti

Feeling like I’ve accomplished nothing in the time I’ve been here, I decided to throw myself into whatever projects I can help benefit in my time here. I started a craft with the kids, and it has really taken off. I have been painting rocks found on the grounds of the orphanage. And of this small craft was born a fundraising project that we have been calling, Rockin’ Haitian Mommas! We have been selling them for $20 each. At our orphanage, $20 will purchase the food for 67 meals to be consumed. Not too shabby.  Within a few weeks of starting to advertise my little craft on Facebook, I received a custom order for 20 Asian Rockin’ Haitian Momma’s for a child’s birthday party. This order resulted in a $400 donation to our orphanage. This order alone paid for 1,340 meals to be consumed by our children. AWESOME! I’m excited that this project is being received so positively. Rockin’ Haitian Mommas are now for sale in Fermathe, Haiti at The Baptist Mission gift shop, Mountain Maid.  All rocks are found on the grounds of the orphanage and the streets of Port au Prince, Haiti. 100% of the funds I collect from the rocks I paint are donated directly to our orphanage.

I also started teaching the project to some of the women of Kofael. I’m hoping that it helps them by providing another opportunity for them to make and sell goods to support their families. Additionally, I helped with the initial organization and promotion of a foundation here in Haiti called Fondasyon Timoun Jodi. The goal of the foundation is to provide the means for street kids and children here in Haiti, who have lost a parent, to go to school.  Please consider helping this foundation in their goal to help give these deserving children a bright future.

More information about Kofael and the women this wonderful project supports can be found here:

Fondasyon Timoun Jodi is a small project with a bright future. Please read about how this fledgling foundation is working to help educate Haiti’s children:

The timing of my stay in Haiti aligned perfectly to help with a lot of the marketing and fundraising materials used for a campaign known as 30 Abes. A food-packing event that took place in Tennessee sponsored by TEEM HAITI, Numana, and The Bobby Bones Show produced 50,000 meals that have been shipped to Haiti to benefit our orphanage. Rockin’ Haitian Mommas were available at the event. I hope that they helped bring in a little cash to help pay for the much needed food and supplies our children require.
